Get New Tires for Your Car

Nowadays, most tires come with wear bars that run across the tire tread pattern, and when they become visible, it's a sign that your tread is bare. However, you can never really be fully sure about when and whether your car needs new tires. Performing this penny test will let you know if it's time to replace your tires.

First, grab a penny with Lincoln's head down and facing you. Insert the penny in your tire tread. If your tire absorbs all or part of Lincoln's head, your tire is in good condition, but if all of Lincoln's head is seen, then your tire needs to be replaced.

The penny test is an almost perfect benchmark to test your tire's condition as the distance between the edge of a penny and the top of Lincoln’s head is exactly 2/32”, which is the official tread limit for your tire.

The penny test can also be performed with a quarter with Washington's head going into the tread. However, the distance between the edge of a quarter and the top of Washington’s head is 4/32”, which is why you need to consider replacing your tire between the 4/32” and 2/32” mark.

"Traveling through on the way to Wisconsin and had 2 coils go out on our GMC Acadia. The dealership wanted $788. We found the parts (thank you Edwin at Auto Zone) and Auto Station fixed it for $170. We were back on the road about
an hour later! Much love!"
